Chiefs tie for first at conference boys tennis tournament (Daily Gate City)

FAIRFIELD — The Keokuk Chiefs shared the Southeast Conference Boys Tennis Tournament Monday.

Keokuk and Mount Pleasant each scored 17 points. Fairfield and Fort Madison tied for third with 10 points.

Michael Simpson won Keokuk’s lone individual title.

Simpson scored a 7-5, 6-0 win over Gabe Dezzeo in the opening round and a 6-3, 6-4 win over Mount Pleasant’s Nick Sandeen to win the title in No. 6 singles.

Reade Reiter, Dylon Hoewing, Gavin Haner, Peyton Skender and Gage Stice each placed second in singles for Keokuk.

Reiter won his opening match in No. 1 singles 3-6, 6-0, 10-8 over Fairfield’s Navin Martin, but fell in the final 7-6 (7-2), 6-4 to Mount Pleasant’s Ben Zihlman. Hoewing opened with a 4-6, 7-5, 11-9 win over Fort Madison’s Johnny Hernandez, but lost in the final 6-3, 6-2 to Mount Pleasant’s Ethan Weber in No. 2 singles.

Haner knocked off Mount Pleasant’s Joey Holtkamp 6-2, 6-1, but fell in the final to Fort Madison’s Sam Avery 7-5, 6-2 in No. 3 singles. Peyton Skender scored a 6-4, 6-2 win over Mount Pleasant’s Elijah Plooster, but Fort Madison’s Austin Krueger won the title in No. 4 singles with a 6-4, 2-6, 15-13 win over Skender.

Stice defeated Fairfield’s Jarod Willmon 7-6 (7-3), 6-3 in the opening round of No. 5 singles, but Mount Pleasant’s Corbin Broeker defeated Stice 6-2, 6-2 in the final.

Skender and Simpson took second in No. 3 doubles. They opened with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Willmon and Dezzeo, but Broeker and Jaxon Hoyle defeated Skender and Simpson 3-6, 6-2, 11-9.

Reiter and Haner took third in No. 1 doubles. They lost the opener to Zihlman and Weber 6-4, 4-6, 10-5, but bounced back to defeat Fort Madison’s Dante Seaney and Hernandez 8-2.

Hoewing and Stice placed third in No. 2 doubles. Fort Madison’s Avery and Austin Krueger defeated Hoewing and Stice 0-6, 6-2, 10-4, but the Keokuk duo defeated Mount Pleasant’s Plooster and Holtkamp 8-2 in the consolation match.
